A Place at the Table The Gay Individual in American Society by Bruce Bawer
Poseidon Press, $21 hardcover
Reviewed by Andrew Sterling
Bruce Bawer wants his place at the table, and he is likely to offend some members of the lesbian and gay community trying to get it.
Bawer, a gay conservative, social critic and writer for The Wall Street Journal, among other publications, takes the title of his latest book from a speech in which President Clinton expressed hopes for a nation in which every American will have "a place at the table."
But if gays have been denied their place, it's partly their own fault, he says. He blames the gay subculture with reinforcing stereotypes and alienating straight America. Indeed, by "ghettoizing" themselves, celebrating promiscuity, adopting a victim mentality and tyrannizing other gays with their notions of political correctness, the sub-culture-oriented activists assure that they will never be an equal part of society, he says. Bawer is not the first gay writer to take such a controversial stance (Marshall Kirk and Hunter Madsen expressed a similar
view in their 1989 book After the Ball), and he acknowledges that straight society, by making gays social outcasts, discourages stable, monogamous gay relationships.
But he also believes that the negative image most straights have of gays is fostered by the in-your-fac radicalism of activists such as Donna Minkowitz, and by the outrageous behavior exhibited by the minority of the participants in gay pride parades—the drag queens and leather men who always seem to end up on the evening news.
Some might dismiss Bawer as a gay Uncle Tom. He goes overboard a bit in distinguishing between "mainstream" and "subculture-oriented" gays-clearly trying to distance himself from the subculture as much as possible while admitting that, for many, it serves an important function. But whether one agrees with Bawer or not, he lays out his thesis in a well-thought-out, reasoned manner that often makes a lot of sense. The vast majority of gay people, he emphasizes, are no different from the vast majority of straight people-except, of course, for their sexual orientation.
His solution: coming out. As he writes, "Homophobia will not end until every heterosexual knows and cares about one gay person."
